Ryan Salkeld (Churchland H.S.), from Portsmouth, VA, started playing hockey at age 4 and grew up in the Hampton Roads Whalers youth and junior system. After his final season with the Whalers, he was recruited to play at NCAA Buffalo State. Ryan went on to play all 4 years at Buffalo State - winning many honors and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. His post-college professional career consisted of 4 years spent playing in the ECHL & SPHL. Salkeld won the SPHL Championship and led the league in scoring in 18-19. After finishing his professional career in 2020, Salkeld is now pursuing a career as a professional hockey referee.
The Virginia Beach Sports Club was founded in 1952 in response to a call from the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce for assistance in sponsoring golf tournaments in which nationally known players would participate. Activities have been broadened to include a wide variety of sports related events and projects.
The primary project of the Club is the financial support given to athlete scholars from the Virginia Beach high schools. The scholarship program was only an idea until Mr. Gordon Kavanaugh donated a sizeable contribution to really get it off the ground. The Club has awarded over 450 scholarships totaling over $300,000 since the program began. Through this program, the Sports Club is investing in the future of Virginia Beach, by helping the education of our most important product – our future.
Each spring the Club conducts its annual Sports Jamboree to raise funds to support the scholarship program and honor high school athletes and coaches. The Jamboree recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes from each of the Virginia Beach Public High Schools. The Jamboree awards are primarily for extraordinary athletic achievements during the school year. The athletic awards are distinct and separate from the scholarship awards presented at the end of the school year for academic accomplishments.
