MONTHLY LUNCHEON

Tide Swimming at the PA YMCA Pool - May 12th

Coach Richard joined Tide in August 2016 as Associate Head Coach and was promoted to Head Coach in August 2019. Born in Iowa, he grew up in southern California and swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. Richard went on to the University of California at Berkeley and swam for the men’s team from 2004 – 2008.

After graduation, Richard joined the staff at Mission Viejo and coached in various capacities from novice to all levels, with swimmers age eight to eighteen. Richard primarily served as the 13/14 Division Director, National Team Assistant Coach, and Dryland Programming Director. In 2009, Richard spent a month in Japan running and facilitating a sports camp for Japanese children ages four to sixteen.

During his time at Tide, Richard has helped produce 10 Olympic Trials Qualifiers. Additionally, he and his staff have helped dozens of athletes take the next step into collegiate swimming careers at the D1, D2, and D3 levels. He has also been honored twice with the Virginia Swimming Senior Coach of the Year Award. “I coach because I am passionate about helping young people discover their own path and goals in life. I feel blessed to be able to help them find enjoyment in the process, not just the end result.

Virginia Beach Sports Club History

Founding

The Virginia Beach Sports Club was founded in 1952 in response to a call from the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce for assistance in sponsoring golf tournaments in which nationally known players would participate. Activities have been broadened to include a wide variety of sports related events and projects.

A Tradition of Giving

The primary project of the Club is the financial support given to athlete scholars from the Virginia Beach  high schools. The scholarship program was only an idea until Mr. Gordon Kavanaugh donated a sizeable contribution to really get it off the ground. The Club has awarded over 470 scholarships totaling over $440,000 since the program began.  Through this program, the Sports Club is investing in the future of Virginia Beach, by helping the education of our most important product – our future.

Jamboree

Each spring the Club conducts its annual Sports Jamboree to raise funds to support  the scholarship program and honor high school athletes and coaches.  The Jamboree recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes from each of the Virginia Beach Public High Schools.  The Jamboree awards are primarily for extraordinary athletic achievements during the school year.  The athletic awards are distinct and separate from the scholarship awards presented at the end of the school year for academic accomplishments.
